Course Overview
Abrasive blasting and coating application combine airborne particulate exposure, confined or semi-confined work areas, and hazardous coating chemistries — a combination that demands strict procedural discipline to protect both worker health and coating quality. In fabrication, marine, and industrial maintenance operations across the Middle East, where surface preparation and protective coating work are routine on structural steel, pipelines, and tanks, safe and competent blasting and coating practice is essential to both operational safety and asset longevity.
This training course is designed to build practical competency in abrasive blasting and coating application for personnel responsible for surface preparation and protective coating work. The course is aligned with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.94: Ventilation and SSPC-SP: Surface Preparation Standards, which establish the framework for abrasive blasting safety and surface preparation quality. Participants will learn to identify blasting and coating hazards, apply correct equipment operation and PPE use, achieve required surface preparation standards, and apply coatings safely and correctly under supervision.

1. Introduction to Blasting and Coating Operations
Overview of abrasive blasting and coating processes including (surface preparation, primer application, and topcoat application)
Applicable international standards and regulatory requirements including (OSHA 29 CFR 1910.94, SSPC-SP standards, and local environmental regulations)
Roles and responsibilities including (blaster, coater, and supervisor duties)
Overview of blasting and coating incidents and their primary causes including (uncontrolled dust exposure, equipment failure, and confined space hazards)
2. Abrasive Blasting Media and Equipment
Common abrasive media types including (steel grit, garnet, and aluminum oxide) and their applications
Blasting equipment components including (pot, hoses, nozzles, and air compressor systems)
Equipment pre-use inspection including (hose condition, nozzle wear, and deadman control function)
Selecting media and pressure settings based on substrate and coating specification
3. Surface Preparation Standards
Applying SSPC-SP cleanliness standards including (near-white metal, commercial blast, and brush-off blast grades)
Achieving required surface profile depth for coating adhesion
