Course Overview
Chlorine is one of the most widely used yet hazardous chemicals in industrial and water treatment operations — a toxic gas that can cause severe respiratory harm within seconds of exposure, and whose handling demands strict procedural discipline at every stage from storage to transfer. In water treatment, petrochemical, and industrial facilities across the Middle East, where chlorine is routinely stored and handled under high ambient temperatures, the ability to manage chlorine safely is a critical operational and life-safety requirement.
This training course is designed to build practical competency in safe chlorine handling for personnel involved in chlorine storage, transfer, and emergency response. The course is aligned with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.119: Process Safety Management of Highly Hazardous Chemicals and relevant chemical storage guidance under NFPA 855: Standard for the Installation of Stationary Energy Storage Systems principles applied to hazardous material storage, which establish the framework for hazardous chemical handling and emergency preparedness. Participants will learn to identify chlorine hazards, apply safe handling and storage procedures, use appropriate personal protective equipment, and respond correctly to leaks and exposure incidents.

1. Introduction to Chlorine Hazards
Physical and chemical properties of chlorine including (toxicity, vapor density, and reactivity)
Applicable international standards and regulatory requirements including (OSHA 29 CFR 1910.119 and local hazardous chemical regulations)
Health effects of chlorine exposure including (respiratory irritation, exposure limits, and delayed symptoms)
Overview of chlorine-related incidents and their primary causes including (valve failure, container damage, and transfer errors)
2. Chlorine Storage and Container Management
Cylinder and container types including (100-lb cylinders, ton containers, and bulk storage systems)
Storage area requirements including (ventilation, segregation from incompatible materials, and temperature control)
Container handling and securing procedures including (proper stacking, restraint systems, and transport precautions)
Inspection of containers and valves for damage or leakage indicators
3. Safe Handling and Transfer Procedures
Safe connection and disconnection procedures including (valve operation and leak testing before use)
Transfer system components including (regulators, piping, and scrubber systems)
