Most workplace incidents are not caused by the absence of safety policies — they are caused by workers who do not recognize the hazard in front of them, do not understand the risk they are taking, and do not know that their action or inaction is the last line of defence between a normal working day and a preventable injury. Safety is not the exclusive responsibility of managers and safety officers. Every worker who enters a workplace, handles equipment, uses a substance, works at height, or operates near moving machinery is making safety decisions continuously — whether they realize it or not.
