Course Overview
Lifting equipment does not fail without warning. Defects develop progressively — corrosion reduces structural cross-section, fatigue cracks propagate from repeated load cycling, hook throat dimensions increase from overloading, and sling fibres degrade from UV exposure, chemical contamination, and mechanical abrasion. The maintenance and inspection system surrounding lifting equipment exists precisely to catch these defects before they cause a failure under load. When that system fails — because maintenance intervals are not adhered to, defects are not recognized, withdrawal criteria are not known, or records are not kept — the consequence is not a near miss. It is a catastrophic load drop or structural collapse with fatal consequences.
This training course develops the safety maintenance competency required of personnel responsible for the inspection, pre-use checking, routine maintenance, and condition assessment of lifting equipment and lifting accessories in industrial, construction, and facility management environments. The course is aligned with LOLER 1998 — Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 — specifically Regulation 5 (strength and stability), Regulation 7 (marking), Regulation 9 (thorough examination — mandating 6-monthly examination for person-carrying equipment and lifting accessories, 12-monthly for all other lifting equipment), and Regulation 10 (reports and defect notification) — and PUWER 1998 — Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998, which requires under Regulation 5 that all work equipment is maintained in an efficient state, efficient working order, and good repair, and under Regulation 6 that inspection records are maintained.
