Course Overview
Sand blasting generates intense airborne particulate, high-pressure equipment hazards, and confined or semi-confined work conditions — a combination that demands strict operational discipline to protect the operator's health and achieve consistent surface preparation quality. In fabrication, marine, and industrial maintenance operations across the Middle East, where structural steel, pipelines, and tanks routinely require abrasive blasting before coating, safe and competent blaster operation is essential to both worker protection and project quality.
This training course is designed to build practical competency in safe sand blasting operation for personnel responsible for surface preparation work. The course is aligned with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.94: Ventilation and SSPC-SP: Surface Preparation Standards, which establish the framework for abrasive blasting exposure control and surface preparation quality. Participants will learn to identify blasting hazards, apply correct equipment operation and PPE use, achieve required surface cleanliness standards, and work safely under supervision in blasting environments.

1. Introduction to Sand Blasting Operations
Overview of sand blasting and its role in surface preparation including (rust removal, coating adhesion, and surface profiling)
Applicable international standards and regulatory requirements including (OSHA 29 CFR 1910.94, SSPC-SP standards, and local environmental regulations)
Roles and responsibilities including (blaster, pot operator, and supervisor duties)
Overview of sand blasting incidents and their primary causes including (uncontrolled dust exposure, hose failure, and equipment misuse)
2. Abrasive Media and Equipment
Common abrasive media types including (silica sand, steel grit, and garnet) and their applications
Blasting equipment components including (pot, hoses, nozzles, and air compressor systems)
Equipment pre-use inspection including (hose condition, nozzle wear, and deadman control function)
Selecting media and pressure settings based on substrate requirements
3. Surface Preparation Standards
Applying SSPC-SP cleanliness standards including (near-white metal, commercial blast, and brush-off blast grades)
Achieving required surface profile depth for coating adhesion
Verifying surface cleanliness including (visual comparison standards)
