Course Overview
Water transport introduces risks that many passengers and personnel are simply unfamiliar with — unstable footing during boarding, limited escape routes in an emergency, and the added complexity of responding to incidents while afloat. In coastal, offshore, and inland waterway operations across the Middle East, where boat transport supports everything from crew transfers to passenger tourism, ensuring every traveler understands basic water safety is essential to preventing drowning, injury, and panic-driven incidents.
This training course is designed to build practical safety awareness for personnel and passengers who travel by boat as part of their work or daily operations. The course is aligned with the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) and the IMO Life-Saving Appliances (LSA) Code, which establish the framework for vessel safety equipment and passenger protection requirements. Participants will learn to apply safe boarding and disembarkation practices, correctly use personal flotation devices, recognize onboard hazards, and respond appropriately to emergencies including man-overboard and vessel evacuation scenarios.

1. Introduction to Boat Travel Safety
Overview of common boat travel contexts including (crew transfer vessels, passenger ferries, and offshore support craft)
Applicable international standards and regulatory requirements including (SOLAS, the IMO LSA Code, and local maritime authority regulations)
Passenger and crew responsibilities including (following crew instructions and pre-boarding safety briefings)
Overview of common boat travel incidents and their primary causes including (falls during boarding, capsizing, and man-overboard events)
2. Pre-Boarding Safety Procedures
Vessel safety briefing content including (muster points, emergency exits, and safety equipment locations)
Weather and sea condition awareness including (checking forecasts and understanding cancellation criteria)
Verifying vessel capacity and passenger manifest procedures
Identifying vessel safety certification and equipment readiness indicators
3. Safe Boarding and Onboard Movement
Safe boarding and disembarkation techniques including (gangway use, handrail use, and timing with vessel movement)
Moving safely around the vessel including (maintaining three points of contact and awareness of deck hazards)
Identifying onboard hazards including (slippery decks, low headroom, mooring lines, and shifting cargo)
